"One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" has got to be one of the best books I've ever read! It is extremely heavy on metaphors as well as subliminal comments on society. A warning to easily offended readers: it does have a bit of swearing and some sexual content. The setting is an asylum probably in the 60s. The story revolves around the patients, and they are a really interesting set of characters. If you don't consider yourself an advanced reader you probably shouldn't pick up this book. The reason for that is the same reason that it's so great. It's really easy to get lost while reading, and if you do you will be missing out on a lot. It is written from the perspective of Chief, one of the asylum's patients. So since he is mentally ill he does drift around in what he says and he does use lots of metaphors. But that's what makes the book so great! It is a really interesting perspective. He's almost looking at things from a third-person perspective while still being there. You need to read it to understand. So the in this asylum whole ward is (metaphorically)controlled by Ms. Ratched (the Big Nurse as she's called by Chief). She controls everyone, even the other nurses and the orderlies, with a strict regime where she "implants things in people" in order to make them the way she wants them, it really is no way to live. One day a man named McMurphy is admited at the ward from a prison work farm, he's a conman but a hardworker (he's been a farmer and he's fresh off a prison work farm) who knows how to make people laugh. Well he's obviously not a character accepted by the Big Nurse. McMurphy is a betting man so he bets that he only needs a week and he'll be able to topple the Big Nurse's regime. I don't want to spoil the story, but for those of you who've read it you'll know what I mean when I say that the ending despite maybe not being the expected could not have been more satisfying of a conclusion to this story. One of my favorite moments from the story is when McMurphy makes people bet on whether or not he can lift a control panel. He begins boasting and saying how easy it'll be, until he tries. He tries so hard he tears his hands and starts bleeding. "But I tried, didn't I? Goddammit at least I did that!" that's what he says as he walks away leaving everyone silent. This scene was extremely powerful in my opinion. It's funny, it's tragic, it's deep/metaphorical, it's engaging, and it's just a great read. It is quite advance however it is not as complicated as many of the books released during the book's time. I loved it and I think you would too. If I talked about every moral situation and symbolic events this book had I'd write a whole essay here. I still find it hard to believe how much was packed in such a short novel, I just can't even get close to saying how influential this book was for me. Warning: it will make you rethink your life. So that's all, and remember, one flew East, one flew West, and one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
What was the big deal with Fluoride in the 1950's? Was our big question and just like last time the link to the actual presentation. A short answer to this would be people didn't want to drink water because they believed that the recent addition of fluoride into water was a communist plot. Thanks a lot McCarthy for making us relive the Salem Witch Trials! What are Indian Reservations? This was our first big question that we had to present for,it also happens to be the link to the actual presentation. Indian Reservations are, as you may have already know, pieces of land where Native American people are left to live their life style in peace. However it was different back when they were first established and they have evolved over the years.Dear Luis,
I'm pretty sure you're doing great right about now. Well I don't know how you'll look coming out the other end after the SAT & honors but if you're anything like me then you probably aced that stuff. See if you can get the highest SAT score! Well anyway, I hope that after all of the work you've had to do you've still had time for anime, games, and all that other nerd crap you like. If the answer is yes then cool. If it's no then remember the wise words of the senior who introduced you to visual novels, "Make time loser!". That was not meant as an insult in case you've forgotten about it, which you probably haven't. By the way, were you lucky enough to end up with your friends in Senior year? If you have then that's really great. I hope you remember how bummed you were that you didn't end up with many friends in your class. But it actually became not that bad when the classes got really interesting and you started hearing rumors on how strict the teacher was in the class where your friends are. Well I hope that you're able to hold up in whatever hostile and unfamiliar environment you end up in. you've already done it a few times before! Work on your Senior project if you haven't already finished it & remember to hold onto your ego and self righteousness. Contrary to what people might tell you it actually will help you, like it has many times before. Well that's all, but before I end I want you to remember that one phrase that you can shout from the rooftops whenever you're "losing your way". DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY! Never let go of your otaku roots man! -Luis Martinez (past) A lot of things have started happening. Which ones will I remember? I could say that I'll only remember the bad things. But not enough bad things have happened for me to say that. I could say that I'll only remember the good things then. But not enough good things have happened to me either. I do hope I can remember all of the friends I made. Because really they came out of nowhere. I went from being completely friendless then I made so may good friends as easy as turning around and making a joke. That's really all it took. I hope I can remember all of the new passions that I found this year. Art, I entered screen printing on a whim and haven't missed a single meeting for almost a year now. Anime, a casual interest of mine until IO met many other otakus. And honestly now I've become more of an otaku than any of them. I hope I can remember all of my mistakes. Whenever I make one it keeps me up for hours in regret, so it's probably safe to say I won't forget them. I hope I can remember all of my achievements. My ego will probably never let me forget them though. If I could, would I choose to remember everything? Would I choose to forget everything? Well, I guess I'll find out once I've been forced to leave all of these things behind. Then I'll know what really mattered then.
This is one of my many 6 word memoirs. I chose to put this one up since it's the one that I made for open house. It is currently framed in Dr. P's room. I really enjoyed writing these and I am really happy with how my frame came out. By the way, the drawing here is one of the designs that I made for screen printing.
