- What are your thoughts on this year’s structures in math class (open-ended problems, group work, discussions, writing)? How has this compared to previous years?
- I think that the reason that this year had a focus on group work. Is because we tackled a lot of new and complex concepts and problems. I know that it's thanks to group work that I was able to understand all the new concepts that we tackled in math class this year. also I think that the reason these problems were more open ended was so that we had to do more work to solve the problems, in doing that we came to understand the actual concept more. So basically, we didn't memorize how to solve a problem we learned how to solve a problem. This differs from previous years since the concepts have been a bit more simple and didn't really require us to work in a group to complete. This year was different in that aspect.
- Why do you think we pushed so much on group work and creating a classroom culture?
- I feel that the reason that group work was pushed so much was so that in the future we will be able to work in a group more easily and just be able to understand overall how to work in a group. Here in HTH group work and classroom culture are two very important things. So it's good to have a classroom where we don't only learn math but also these values that HTH holds so highly.
- What is your greatest strength as a group member? What is an area of growth within group work?
- I think that my greatest strength as a group member is being able to help out other students who may not understand the problem as much as I do. Whenever I come to understand a problem I try to pass on that knowledge to my classmates. I do this whenever I can.
- How do you think your classmates view you as a student? Group member? Mathematician? How do you want them to view you?
- I think that my classmates view me as a good mathematician who is very proud of himself whenever he manages to get a problem or a concept right. I'd like people to view me this way, but I'd still like people to also know that I might need help once in a while.
- What were some of the challenges you encountered in math class this semester (it does not have to be about math concepts)? What were some moments you were proud of?
- One of these moments would definitely be in math honors, specifically on our latest concept, identities. Really it looked like I was studying literature! This is just a small example. This has happened to me in most of our honors concepts and sometimes even in regular class when I felt just overwhelmed by a certain concept. However I am always able to overcome these challenges. So these would be the moments that I'm proud of.
- Tell me about some goals you have for next semester.
- One definite goal for the next semester would be to try to bring lunch in every day next semester since whenever I don't eat lunch or drink something I get really sleepy in math class to the point where I have dozed off for a few seconds. So that goal relates to a bigger one which would be to try to grasp concepts quicker than I do now. And also I have everyone's goal which is to get an A.
- What will you do to make sure to follow through with these goals?
- Well to make sure I follow through with my goals I need to make an extra effort to be focused in class since sometimes when I'm not sleepy I day dream and just begin of thinking of other things and when I come back to, the lecture is over. Also I need bread for sandwiches. But mostly I just need to remember to focus.
- Any additional thoughts or comments on the year thus far?
- It's been difficult but it's been rewarding.
- Write at least one question you have for me (I encourage you to write more!).
- Are we going to do any projects next semester?
