Yesterday was my first day interning at SPAWAR, and I've gotta say, it was even better than I thought it would be. The moment I arrived I noticed that SPAWAR was just this huge place with so many huge buildings with so many different things happening inside. Many of them appealed directly to my interest in urban exploration. Some were very old, they were built as far back as World War 2! The reason I got to see so much of this huge place is thanks to one of my mentors Leslie Bolick who is a really amazing lady. She was fairly new so she took the opportunity to take me around and explore SPAWAR with her. Something else I noticed is that pretty much every single employee over at SPAWAR is an interesting person. Whenever I see somebody they are doing something. THere's people walking down the dirt roads n groups of ten looking like they just pulled off some huge experiment, there's people madly typing away at computers, and much more. As a matter of fact, a lot of the people I saw there reminded me of the scientist characters in sci-fi movies. It's hard to explain but it can't be more true. Something I am very excited about at SPAWAR is that I actually have my own desk! Actually I have two desks for the two buildings I'll be working in! I don't know why I'm so excited by this but I really am. I don't know exactly what I will be working on but I have many general ideas. For example, I know my work will involve GPS and UAVs. I also know that it will involve mapping areas since I was told directly and also I was given the task of mapping certain locations at SPAWAR as "homework". I also had to do a lot of research on SPAWAR, the branch of it that I'll be working in, and GPS as part of that "homework". As I previously mentioned the name of one of my mentors is Leslie Bolick, she is really cool and has been an amazing mentor showing me around SPAWAR. My other Mentor is Kara Sorensen, although I barely spoke with her I can also tell sh's really cool and I look forward to working with both of them. I am very excited but also a little bit worried. This worry is simply that I might not be able to live up to the expectations SPAWAR might have for me or I might not be able to reach the set goals. However I'm not letting that stop me and I am putting a tremendous amount of effort into the work I do there.
So I've recently acquired my internship but I only then found out that it's going to be at this place called SPAWAR. I had heard about this place but I wasn't quite sure what they were or what they do exactly so I did some research. In this assignment my task would normally be to transcribe an interview with my mentor however when I went to go ask Ms. Lisa about who my mentor is she replied that I'm going to go in blind. This seemed a bit strange to me but there must be some kind of reason since this is a government facility. I also had to provide a lot of my information including my social security number so that they could run a background check. But anyway, because I can't interview my mentor then I just have to write whatever I find out about SPAWAR and write more about my internship process. I found out that SPAWAR stands for The Space And Naval Warfare Systems Command. So I'm really excited because that place just sounds so cool. I looked through their website and found out a lot of stuff about them such as the things they've developed. One thing that stood out quite a bit was some kind of beam used in aircrafts that would be able to disable vehicles. I don't know just where I'll be working here or on what but I do know that whatever it is it has to do with botany, computers, and photography. I have a friend who interned at SPAWAR last year and he says that he had a really good time there so I'm expecting that whatever I end up doing over there, it's going to be a fun and interesting time.
At the moment I do not have my internship. However I am working on finding one. My interest is computers, IT, programing, anything computer related. I already interviewed with the FAA but didn't get an internship and I also asked a computer repair store but they weren't interested. My strategy for looking for possible internships has just been googling computers in my area and looking at closeby locations that might work. Unfortunately many of the computer repair shops nearby are too small to take an intern. So recently I've been talking a lot with LIsa Davis and she's been working to try to get me an internship involving computers and botany I'm not quite sure yet what it is but it sounds very interesting! Currently I am still researching internships in case I can't get the internship Lisa is trying to get me so my next steps involve getting back up internships and hoping I get the one LIsa is trying to get me.
